Minecraft Mushroom Island Biome

Image area is 12.25" x 9.5". Acrylic Ink on Denril vellum (a translucent polypropylene, 3 mils thick). The entire picture was then sealed with Krylon Acrylic Workable Spray Fixatif. part of the surviving 11 pieces done for the Minecraft Atlas, Egmont UK. There's far more art than this in the finished book, most of it digital. I used these sheets to create "digital zipatone" which I Photoshopped atop pen and ink outlines of the required structures. The final effect was that of seeing a contemporary computer game rendered by a 19th-century engraver, a smart concept on the AD's part. This was a very demanding and difficult job, a brute on my eyes and a bit deja-vu-ish. The process I devised to do the book was basically pre-computer technical illustration, which is where I started my career in the 80s. Lots of inked isometric vellums used as keylines for zipatone or letraset overlays, lots of fussing over line rulings, lots of burn/dodge on the stat machine.

Singh, Mahendra
Bio:
Mahendra Singh is a freelance illustrator located in Montreal, Quebec. He is best known to comic fans for his work on the Adventure Time related books "The Adventure Time Encyclopedia" and "Adventure Time: The Enchiridion".

Mahendra Singh has a very unique illustration style that closely resembles traditional engraving. His beautiful images are created by using dip pens with English or German nibs onto Denril paper, a special type of vellum which never cracks/stretches/warps. The whole page is then treated with Krylon Spray Fix afterwards to further protect it. All of this combines to create a slightly textured, unique, and truly compelling work of original art.
